Since the launch of the iphone and ipad, the one aspect that web developers have had to frustratingly work around is the fact that these mobile devices will not view Flash animations.

Web developers have usually had to substitute the nice animation work for a javascript transition animation instead, which while still visually nice, lacks the functionality that Flash does.

But there is now finally a solution!

Google have now launched Swiffy…an online app which allows you to convert your Flash SWF files into HTML5 and then load into your website, which will then finally run perfectly on iPads and iPhones.

Simply go to the Google Swiffy page and upload your Flash SWF file, and it will convert the file for you in just a few seconds!

Swiffy currently supports SWF 8 and ActionScript 2.0, and the output will work in all Webkit browsers, including Chrome and Mobile Safari.

Web developers rejoice!

These days having a website to promote yourself online is not enough.

By planning and integrating smart online marketing campaigns using social media such as Facebook and Twitter can increase your profit by 400% or more within 24 hours!

The only other ways to achieve this result online would be pay-per-click marketing such as Google Adwords or Facebook ads, yet professional social media marketing costs a fraction of what you would spend on other online services.

The big advantage of marketing using social media is that you promote your products more effectively by branding and utilising your social media pages more effectively.

Did you know nearly 80% off Facebook business accounts don’t use their Facebook business page to attract or promote their services?
Most don’t even realise that you can brand your Facebook business page up, add contact forms, run videos or even set up booking forms, blogs and shopping carts directly inside of Facebook!

Here is a quick example of what your Facebook business page could look like:

By branding up your Facebook page you not only strengthen your branding by becoming more recognisable but you also make it easier to create an online following as you look professional.

The same can be done with Twitter, Youtube and so on.

Here is an example of a Twitter custom branded page:

So now that you can see what can easily be done using these free powerful online social media marketing tool, if you aren’t generating customers and sales using social media you are probably missing out on a lot of business!

The web design industry is a very competitive industry.

Not only are web developers struggling to keep up with new technologies, and new ways to market websites, but there is also a lot of competition.
Competition from people undercutting prices and also competition from foreign developers.

It takes a lot to stand out and become a successful web designer or web consultant, unless you have a hidden talent to give you the edge over your competitors.

One clever web consultant has done just that.

Sexy web designer Sarah White runs SarahWhiteConsulting.com, and has earned the reputation as ‘The Naked Consultant’.

Sarah has single handedly put the sexy image into the web development arena, offering Naked (pardon the pun)’Hard’ Coding, and Naked Tutoring, plus she building a mean website!

Sarah White is no bimbo, but rather, with her glasses on (and very little else) more of a sexy geek.

Judging from Sarah’s website, and her tasteful non-nude professional photos, it is all a bit of fun, but you have to agree she’s a clever web entrepreneur, and she makes a refreshing change from the usual pasty-skinned web geeks that look like they never see the light of day.

Sarah’s consultancy packages usually comprise of 3 live video consultations and numerous email exchanges, which include a consultation for the website, a contract detailing the website and timeframe, and initial website draft to get the project rolling.

Whether you prefer Sarah clothed or unclothed during these live video consultations is entirely up to you, though be warned, it could be a little distracting for some.

So for the guys out there that require a new website and would prefer working with a very professional fresh faced web babe check out Sarah White Consulting.

If you are considering the thought of creating a new website or blog, whether to just promote your business online, or in order to make money online, the easiest way to ensure success is to think of your website as a meal.

Before creating your website, just like cooking any meal, there are a number of things to consider:

Planning. When it comes to creating a successful meal, unless you are a master chef you don’t just hope the ingredients in your refrigerator are going to create an award winning dish. There are a number of elements to think about, such as who is going to be eating the meal, how many ingredients and how much of each ingredient is the correct amount to get the perfect flavour and texture, how will you present the final product, and most important of all…is it something they will enjoy.

Your website should be no different.
Before diving in and hoping your website will magically be a success, think about who will be reading it (eg, gender, age, etc), how many categories, topics or pages your website or blog needs to cover. Too little it might not cover enough to be interesting, too many and it is hard for you to complete or just too much for your reader to absorb. Finding the correct balance in content is critical.

And like a meal, getting the ‘texture and flavour’ is very important. Your website or blog could be the most informative site out there, but if it doesn’t have any character to it it will be just plain boring! Add some humour, something unique, or just your own quirky twist to brand it as your own unique ‘dish’ and you will find you will get the end result you want…people will enjoy it!

The flavour of the webpage or blog isn’t just about the content though, ensuring it looks delicious is even more important, so you can catch the attention for people to ‘taste test’ it.

Templated websites are the equivalent of a packet mix. The restaurants of the top restaurants in the world most likely don’t use a Sara Lee pudding mix to serve in their restaurants, so if you want a website that is uniquely your own and not a replication, don’t use a website template unless you really can’t help it. Templated sites never really fit your personal style and always look out of place and usually unprofessional. Pay the money for a few hours design by a professional web designer and start with something unique that you own.

Establish your point of difference. In a city like New York there are literally thousands of restaurants that would serve up a nice juicy steak. Yet what is the difference between the restaurant that struggles for the business compared to another restaurant just up the street which is booked out months in advance? You will find usually it is their unique point of difference…it might be the lighting, the friendly staff, the presentation of the meals, the view, the music, or the additional touches like a warm cloth to wipe your hands with. Whatever it is, this is the secret to their success and popularity, and in the end their revenue.

Your website should be no different, offering something that makes your website uniquely different to all the other websites out there. It can be as simple as offering free downloads, or information no one else provides. A free online service such as quick easy bookings, or a regular newsletter about products. Whatever it is, find yours and integrate it into your website.

Once you have cooked up your website, the secret is to keeping it popular.
Like a meal, the best way to achieve this is keeping it fresh!

Revise your website’s ‘ingredients’ regularly, making sure that the content is fresh and up to date.
Request feedback from visitors, or if you are running a blog allow comments and actually read and reply to people’s feedback. these are your readers and if they can help you improve your website you will ensure they are coming back, and probably recommending your site to others. Keeping your readers appetite wanting more is what drives them back!

Bon appetit!

The most important part of branding a Twitter profile is the use of a custom background. A customized Twitter background has become a must whether you are an individual or a business. One of the benefits of a Twitter custom background is that they reflect your image. Along with reflecting your image, they also help you to shine in the crowd.

If Twitter is being used to promote something, having a custom background will provide an exceptional marketing opportunity.
A perfect tailor made Twitter background can give any average company a great corporate image. There are far more benefits of a Twitter custom background than you probably have ever thought of.

Here are some of the benefits of a Twitter custom background.

1. A Twitter custom background legitimizes your profile:
A well designed Twitter background is the best way to legitimize your profile or a business Twitter page. Leaving the right impression in the minds of visitors is one of the benefits of a Twitter custom background designed exclusively for your company.

2. It provides you and your company free advertising space:
The pre-made Twitter backgrounds are used by almost everyone using Twitter and it becomes very monotonous for visitors to view the same backgrounds repeatedly. Having a beautifully designed custom made background for you and your company makes visitors stop at your profile page. This pause time acts as free advertising space.

3. Increases the number of your followers:
One of the benefits of a Twitter custom background is that an appealing and informational profile background allows you to attract more visitors, increase your network and add more followers to your twitter profile.

4. Adds weight to your tweets:
Tweets are useful for developing new relationships, announcing offers and promotions etc. Your business is bound to miss out on more than half of the benefits of advertising on Twitter, if your profile does not have an attractive background along with valuable messages. With a personalized, custom background that is appropriate for your company, you can gain instant value and create an impact on the users.

5. It allows you to add more information and photos:
You can store limited information on the basic, pre-made Twitter profile backgrounds. Having a custom background will allow you to add photos, contact information, information about your company etc.

6. Allows you to send direct marketing messages:
Sending direct marketing messages in your tweets is a very risky task as there is always a risk of losing your following. Having a customized background image allows you to send direct marketing messages freely. Choose the most important messages that you want your visitors to know and communicate them through your profile.

A custom twitter background allows you to present anything you like to your visitors. It not only helps you to establish your company’s brand or your brand, make your profile legitimate and publish contact as well as other important information but also helps you to differentiate you Twitter account from the remaining accounts.

As part of being an SEO consultant, I’m frequently asked to conduct SEO Audits on potential client’s websites. Amongst sundry other tasks, I always check to see who the legal owner of the site is. With surprising regularity, it turns out NOT to be the guy who commissioned the report, and who mistakenly thinks HE (or she) is the rightful owner! There is more than one aspect to this…

Domain Registrant

Each country has rules governing ownership and transfer of domain names. These rules are clear, unequivocal and rigorously enforced. In all instances, the “registrant” is defined as the legal owner.

Frequently, domains are registered by the website designer on the client’s behalf. Sometimes they may have been initially registered by the office junior, the wife, girlfriend, business partner, the accountant… Time passes. Things change. Maybe now, the registrant is the ex-wife, ex-girlfriend, ex-business partner…

If your name is not listed as the registrant, you do not own the website! Best you get this sorted BEFORE the excrement hits the fan, and some one is holding knife to the throat of your valuable corporate website, demanding a 6-figure ransom!

Website Software

If you are using a licensed copy of a proprietary website software application, you certainly don’t own the software. However, if it is on your own domain, under your control, then you’ve got some security of tenure at least, should any differences of opinion arise with your website designers.

If you are using non-proprietary, Open Source software, on your own domain, hosted on an independent server, you’re in far better shape in the sense of having control over your assets.

If you’re using proprietary software owned by your website design company, hosted on their servers… you have a massive risk exposure in the event of a difference of opinion over when (or if) you should pay your accounts. If they are also listed as the registrant of the domain, you have placed yourself in an unenviable, vulnerable and potentially devastating position. Silly you… Oh dear, how sad, never mind!

Hosting

Hosting is a vexed question, and its damned hard to establish if the hosting company is a real hosting company, or an affiliate reseller of another company’s hosting services. Sometimes, there are multiple tiers… That said, do you know who to call if something bad happens to your website? The worst aspect of website designer’s hosting service is, its usually in a reseller sub-account, and you cannot have access to the nitty-gritty parts of the site. Things like FTP access, root-level file editing, messing with email accounts, installing other software, or direct access to stats data are usually off-limits. At best, that’s a pain in the bottom… at worst, it prevents you from having a full site backup in the event services are terminated for any reason!

And unrelated bad stuff happens! Last month, my hosting company’s US-based Data Centre operators got locked out of their premises, presumably over a rent or maintenance dispute with the building’s owner. Is your website designer smart enough, and well enough connected in the data centre world, to seamlessly relocate ALL client sites to safe environment within a couple of hours?

Website Designers

Al l website designers are not created equal. Most are honest, reliable and decent business people. However, some website designers are control freaks who like to keep cash-cow clients screwed down and locked into systems they cannot easily escape from, and ruthlessly milk them of every possible dollar. All the while, they deliver a minimum of service, and maximum of awkwardness, and make it as difficult as possible for a client to escape their clutches.

Impartial Advice

A decade of dealing with the aftermath of the cowboys, control freaks, the bloody-minded and the plain ignorant has taught me (and some of my clients) some valuable lessons.

1 – Ensure you are the domain registrant, and have access to your domain registration account.

2 – Ensure your hosting account is independent of your website designer, and you have the account access details

3 – Ensure you keep a written copy of your domain and hosting account details with your lawyer or bank

4 – Ensure you have a full site software back up, including all configurations, modules and plugins

5 – Ensure you have a full database backup every month.

6 – Don’t rely totally on the hosting company’s server backup processes…

7 – An oldie but a still-relevant goody – don’t put all your eggs in one basket!

This is rudimentary business risk management. Taking responsibility for your businesses activities is in integral part of management. When things go wrong, as they sometimes do, make sure you have a contingency plan.

Web pages must satisfy two types of users: searchers and search engines. It can be hard to satisfy both because they desire different things. Search spiders visit pages with the express purpose of identifying key areas on the page and indexing it for a search engine. Human visitors are usually looking for specific content, and many times they scan quickly until they find it. The intents are very different, and that makes good web friendly content tricky to write.

How to Write Content for Searchers

Website content should persuade visitors to take action on a page by stressing the best features and promoting them. All pages should be focused and treated as though they were the only thing the visitor will see. Here are some tips for writing content for users:

– Keep pages short with links to more information

- Write pages between 250 to 500 words long

- Use bold headings to break up white space and help users find what they are looking for.

- Use bullets and numbering for easy scanning

- Edit your grammar and typos.

How to Write Content for Search Engines

Your job is to interlace search phrases into the page content so that search engines rank your site for them. Since you have to use the search phrase several times on a page, it can seem be hard to do this without loosing the website style or seeming awkward. In many cases there will be more than one keyword phrase you will want to optimize for as well. Here are some helpful guidelines for writing keyword rich copy:

Keyword Approach. Focus on the primary search phrase first, and then alternate the other keywords throughout the page. It is very difficult to optimize for more than three search phrases per page, so strive to keep pages focused, and add more pages if more keywords are desired.

Length of Page Copy. Write about 250-350 words on each page. Search engines can easily discern page focus at this length.

Titles & Meta Tags: Page titles should be 60 characters long – the same as a Google search title. Meta descriptions should be 150 characters. The meta keyword tag is optional, but many writers use it to keep track of the phrases they are optimizing for. This tag should be about 250 characters long with no duplicates.

Links to Other Pages. Hyperlinks to other pages within the site should contain full or partial search phrases. These are important for search rankings.

Where to Put Search Phrases: Title, meta description, meta keywords, headings, bold print, text links, first two paragraphs of text, last word on the page if possible, and alt tags for images.

Number of Pages. Search engines like robust content on websites, and minimum content for a brochure site should be about 8 pages of optimized copy. Adding a blog really helps to develop additional pages and keep content fresh, especially if the blog is part of the website.

Keyword Density. Writers should check their pages for keyword density. Here is a free keyword density tool for existing pages: http://tools.seobook.com/general/keyword-density/ Here is a free keyword density tool for text: http://textalyser.net/ Keyword density of the search phrases should be around 2-7%.

Single and Plural Search Words. Using both singular and plural forms of the phrase will help in search optimization too. You should use the plural form in the first heading and then switch to the singular form.

Vary the Words that Precede the Phrase. If you don’t do this, the search engines will index the page using the word before the phrase too. This is not what you want.

By following these rules of thumb, and editing several times for both errors and clarity, you can develop user friendly content that is also optimized for search engines.

Recently i had a potential client contact me regarding the opportunity to create a new logo and brand identity for her business.

When I discussed the price she gasped and commented ‘I didn’t want to spend more than $400! I can’t justify that”

Now, compared to many other design agencies, our design rates are quite reasonable, and we charge very fairly, so calmly I decided to asked her:
‘Madam, can you please tell me if you have ever purchased a fashionable outfit for an event for more than $400?’ She replied she had, though was a little puzzled with my question.. I then asked, ‘And have you ever spent more than $1000 in total on beauty products?”. Again she replied; “easily..I spend around $180 a month alone on creams, hair products and makeup. ” But she still didn’t understand what I was getting at.

I them asked, why she would spend more than $400 on a dress (which probably costs $20 to make in China, and is not a one of a kind!) just to most likely be worn once. She replied “to attract potential partners and to flaunt herself to the competition”.

I quickly added..’Just like a nice looking logo and brand identity does for your potential clients and your business competition.’

Suddenly the lightbulb went on and she understood what I was trying to point out… the importance of a good looking logo.

That dress will never make turn her into a success, give her credibility in the marketplace or make her wealthy (unless she is a fashion designer), but yet she would still spend a crazy amount of money on a piece of cheap China designer fabric, rather than spend similar, or less in the long term, on something that can…her Brand Identity.

The point is, the essence of a great brand is the core to a successful business. It is what symbolises the different between your product to your competitors. What your brand stands for is the credibility of your business and it’s products.

The Colonel is dead, yet KFC still have him featured on their logo..why?..the man did great chicken and that brand now symbolises him, and his secret herbs and spices. That brand is worth multi-millions to that company, every single year.

Apple and Nike’s brand are so strong they don’t even need words…a symbol is all they need to reflect what they do. If they were to give those world-renowned icons away it could quite possibly cost them their business, because those icons stand for what they are and what they do.

The bottom line is, before you question the price of how much you custom brand identity might cost, think of the rewards, the credibility it will bring, and the clients it will attract.

Your Brand Identity is not a purchase..it is an investment into possibly your entire business future, and possibly even fund your retirement.

You might suddenly start thinking that $400 dress is a useless rip off (and still really worth $20, from China)
